Agriculture
The last century there was a large
change in agricultural practices. Fifty years ago, the main part
of Slovenia was covered with farms with had extensive agriculture.
In many parts of Slovenia, like around Maribor and around Murska
Sobota the agriculture intensified drastically.
On the other hand, till now people
migrated to the cities or just abandoned the land because it management
was to much of an effort. Due to this many calcereous grasslands
with a high diversity of plants and insects are overgrown by bushes.
Last decenia the government subsidises
the production of mayze. Many species rich meadows are therefore
changed into fields with the logical loss of biodiversity.
Another problem for the future
is that people started agriculture in vulnerable areas like Kocevje
forest. This is one of the last primary forest in Slovenia.
