Canalisation
To avoid any flooding of the land, many river
systems were canalised. All larger rivers like Sava, Drava and
Mura are partly canalised. This has large effect on the flooding
dependent flora and fauna. Slowly they will disappear.
In the cities also all streams
are canalised with concrete walls around it to protect it for
going out of their bedding. Although this seems to be disastreous,
one canalised stream, called Gradascica, in Ljubljana is designated
as a Natura 2000 site. This is because the stream contains an
endangered species.
